Our permanent galleries highlight aspects of the nearly 200 years since the township’s founding.

  • The model train gallery shows the village and surrounding area as they looked in 1910.
  • The main gallery features antique furniture and objects depicting early domestic life. Other displays document the area’s service members, scouting, recreation, religion, educational institutions, and businesses.

Jeannette Gutierrez, President of the Michigan Willow Run Chapter of the American Rosie the Riveter Association, makes this presentation dynamic and fun including a colorful slideshow and artifact display. You will learn not only about the iconic Rosie but the forever impact this movement had and continues to have on women in business and industry.

At the museum, we maintain a small library with photographs, books, and other printed materials relating to important people, places, and topics in township history. 

Hamburg Township’s First Families

Learn more about the hardy souls that first settled Hamburg Township, Michigan beginning in the 1830s. If you were unable to attend one or more of our “First Families” presentations, we are pleased to share the summary documents below. We plan to offer additional family profiles in the future.

 

The DeWolf Family of Hamburg Township
The DeWolf family homestead still stands on M-36 and has been in continuous use by the family since Jason DeWolf built it in 1856/1857. During her presentation, Vicky DeWolf displayed a number of family heirlooms she found in the attic, including Bibles, a handmade lace-edged tablecloth, and locks of hair.

The Dunlavy Family of Hamburg Township
Felix Dunlavy was the first person to purchase land in Hamburg Township, Michigan in 1831. Learn more about the social and  political environment of the time and what drew Felix to this area in this account by Patricia Majher, Administrator of Hamburg Township Museum.

The Winans Family of Hamburg Township
Did you know that Michigan’s 22nd Governor, Edwin B. Winans, moved to Hamburg Township as a child in 1834 and later made his fortune in the town of Rough and Ready, California during the Gold Rush? Read more about his fascinating story in this account by Valerie Winans.
